How to wash heavy winter fabrics without damaging them

Winter in New Zealand brings out our heaviest clothing. Wool jumpers, thick coats, and chunky blankets become daily essentials. But washing these bulky items can feel overwhelming. How do you clean a heavy wool coat without shrinking it? What about that thick winter duvet that barely fits in your machine?

Don’t worry. We’ll guide you through washing heavy winter fabrics safely. You’ll learn the best techniques to keep your winter wardrobe fresh and damage-free.

Understanding heavy winter fabrics

Heavy winter fabrics need special care. Wool, cashmere, and thick cotton blends behave differently than your everyday clothes. They absorb more water, take longer to dry, and can easily lose their shape.

Wool is particularly tricky. It can shrink, felt, or stretch when handled incorrectly. Cashmere requires even gentler treatment. Heavy cotton items like thick jumpers or blankets can become waterlogged and difficult to rinse properly.

Pre-wash preparation

Check the care labels first. Some heavy items need professional cleaning only. For machine-washable pieces, prepare them properly.

Turn garments inside out to protect the outer surface. Close all zips and fasten buttons. This prevents stretching and snagging during the wash cycle.

Remove any detachable parts like belts or fur trim. These often need separate cleaning methods.

Washing heavy winter items

Use cold water for most heavy fabrics. Hot water causes shrinkage and colour bleeding. Choose a gentle or delicate cycle to minimise agitation.

Don’t overload your machine. Heavy, wet fabrics need space to move freely. Wash similar items together – wool with wool, cotton with cotton.

Use a wool-specific detergent for wool items. Regular detergents can be too harsh and cause damage. For cotton pieces, choose a mild, enzyme-free detergent.

The spin cycle challenge

Heavy fabrics hold lots of water. This extra weight can damage your washing machine’s drum if not handled correctly. Use a slower spin speed or skip the final spin entirely.

Consider doing an extra rinse cycle. Heavy fabrics trap detergent easily, and leftover soap can cause stiffness and skin irritation.

Special care for wool and cashmere

Wool needs extra attention. Use lukewarm water only – never hot or cold. Cashmere requires even cooler temperatures.

Don’t rub or wring these fabrics. Gently squeeze out excess water instead. This prevents felting and maintains the fabric’s natural texture. Our CEO, Susan Toft, also gives a special recommendation to skip fabric softener. “It can actually coat the fibres and reduce their natural softness over time. The fabric is designed to be soft without additives”.

Consider using a salad spinner for small cashmere items. It removes water without the harsh spinning action of a washing machine.

When professional help makes sense

Some heavy winter items are too complicated to wash at home. Structured coats, tailored jackets, and items with special finishes can benefit from laundry service care.
